Riff-wise, there's a very prominent influence of 70's-style progressive rock, along with a hefty dose of traditional heavy metal - which is complemented excellently by Swanö's clean vocals - they feel far more gruff & powerful than ever before, yet without losing any of the melody. The overall musical style could be described as a fusion of Swanö's 1998 solo album, 'Moontower', and his prolific progressive rock/metal act Nightingale. However, he has now finally returned to the scene in full force, with a new band & new album! Witherscape was the name of the band, and Swanö handles the vocals, drums, and keyboards while his partner in crime Ragnar Widerberg handles guitar & bass. But in recent years, his output slowed considerably, while he focused mostly on mixing, and little on performing original music, outside of a couple Demiurg albums and a covers album with his progressive metal band Odyssey. Despite the turbulence of the band's existence and (according to Swanö), total apathy of several of the band members - they still came through and released some of the best death metal I've ever heard, a quality which many of their contemporaries (*cough* Opeth *cough*) could never even dream of. Dan Swanö is one of my biggest musical heroes, with Edge of Sanity - the band he is most famous for - being one of my all-time favorite bands.
